Redwood City

Perfectly between the city, the sea, and towering mountains.

Welcome to Redwood City

Situated on the western shore of the San Francisco Bay, Redwood City is located almost perfectly halfway between the cities of San Jose and San Francisco. The midpoint of the San Francisco Peninsula is known for its envied climate, friendly neighbors, and modern urban feel. Downtown is vibrant, home to locally owned shops and businesses, and frequently hosts neighborhood events, such as a highly anticipated Oktoberfest each fall. Homes and eateries within Redwood City enjoy a scenic setting each day of the year knowing anything one could ever want or need is all within a stone’s throw of their front door.

Rich with history, Redwood City is the oldest community on the San Francisco Peninsula. First a small port town during the California Gold Rush, the community grew into a major hub for business and manufacturing in the early 1900s. After a quiet period during the midst of the 20th century, Downtown Redwood City underwent an extensive revitalization project, bringing life to one of Northern California’s most cherished downtown districts.

What to Love

  • Near-perfect location halfway between San Francisco and San Jose
  • A healthy balance of suburban benefits and urban amenities
  • Downtown Redwood City is home to locally owned businesses, shops, and regular community events

Local Lifestyle

Extending from the base of the Santa Cruz Mountains and out to the San Francisco Bay, the community of Redwood City is home to a revitalized downtown district, which is quickly becoming one of the major entertainment districts of the San Francisco Peninsula for its dining, shopping, and community events. The many other parks and trails located throughout town and leading out to the mountains are also popular among locals, thanks to Redwood City’s great weather and 255 days of sunshine a year. This mix of urban convenience and more quiet recreation options have made Redwood City a great place to call home for residents from every phase of life.

Dining, Entertainment, and Shopping

A vibrant, indoor-outdoor setting creating a variety of both traditional and nontraditional woodfired pizzas is found at Vesta, one of Redwood City’s most popular dining establishments. Margherita and spicy pesto pies are favorites, as are others inspired by Italian classics such as carbonara, and more unique offerings like the serrano chili pizza. Burrata, loaded toasts, and perfectly dressed salads are just a few of the other popular pairings, frequently enjoyed with a glass of vino or local craft beer.

Redwood City is widely known for its several local free concerts. The concerts are held in the park, on the square, just for kids, and on the shoreline throughout summer, giving locals of all ages something to look forward to. Pub in the Park is especially looked forward to by the adults, featuring beers and ciders on tap from various local breweries. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs to enjoy a picnic-style afternoon with lawn games, live music, and great company.

Downtown Redwood City is the community’s self-proclaimed “anti mall.” Home to some nationally recognized brands such as Whole Foods and World Market, an abundance of locally-owned shops have put Downtown Redwood City on the map. Thrillist has referred to this pocket as “the Peninsula’s strongest candidate for a sophisticated night out on the town.”

Things To Do

Redwood City is in the middle of it all — the Bay and hillside, San Jose, and San Francisco. Anything not located within the town is a short drive away. Redwood City does boast some of the region's most beautiful scenery, best appreciated on their many trails. The San Francisco Bay Trail is one of the newer additions to NoCal. Upon completion, more than 500 miles of paved walkways will encircle the entirety of San Francisco Bay. The trail will cross through nine counties and 47 cities, providing excellent waterfront views to guests. Nearby, the shady El Corte de Madera Creek Preserve offers nearly 35 miles of hiking, biking, and horseback trails, and unique natural formations. Mossy embankments, native bird species, and panoramic views from mountaintops are just a few of the sites to behold.

Schools

The Peninsula’s perfect halfway point makes no compromises for the quality of public schools. Top-rated campuses are found at:

  • Redwood City Elementary School District, kindergarten-8th grade; RCESD schools have won Blue Ribbon School Awards, are California Distinguished campuses, and have been awarded many other honors and accolades
  • Sequoia Union High School District, grades 9-12; the district has received the Seal of Biliteracy, awarded to students who undertake the four-year language immersion program
